How Do You Know If Your Car Needs a New Battery?

June 27, 2022

For most people, replacing the battery in their car is not something they have to think about very often; new batteries generally come with the car, and when it’s time to replace the battery, you’ll have your mechanic take care of it for you. However, in some cases, you may notice signs that your battery may be on its last legs and that it could be time to replace it with a new one before you get stranded on the side of the road.

Here are three of the most common indications that it’s time to replace your car’s battery, according to the ASE-certified mechanics at Advanced Auto Repair.

1. The Check Engine Light Comes On

Because car batteries are used to start vehicles, many come with a built-in check engine light that lets you know when there’s an issue. If your battery is old, your check engine light might come on frequently; it might also be triggered by other problems unrelated to your battery. Either way, take your car in for service if you see any trouble codes (usually listed as CEL or MIL).

2. Engine Won’t Start When the Temperature Drops

Generally, older cars and cold weather spell trouble for your battery. Colder temperatures make it more difficult for your battery to start the vehicle, and age can increase the corrosion of the electrical components. Check your car’s battery every fall if you live in a colder climate or if you own an older vehicle. If the terminals are tight, hot to the touch, or leaking fluid, it may be time for a new battery.

3. The Vehicle Seems Sluggish When Driving

A slow-starting car is one sign that your battery may be on its last legs. If your engine takes longer than usual to get going, it’s worth having a mechanic take a look at what’s causing it. It could be as simple as needing an oil change, but then again, it could mean your battery is about to fade out completely. The earlier you catch and replace an aging battery, the less of a chance you’ll find yourself on the side of the road in the future.
